Mt. Whitney & Sequoia National Park Trek

Tackle the highest peak in the contiguous USA on this eight-day Mt. Whitney & Sequoia National Park trekking expedition. Not only will you venture through the pristine backcountry forests of Sequoia National Park, you’ll also trek along sections of the Pacific Crest Trail and the John Muir Trail, two of the most iconic paths in the country. Foxtail pines, sprawling meadows, and alpine lakes define this remote section of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and the chance to undergo a pack-assisted trek in this region, leaving you stand hands-free atop the country’s highest peak at 14,495 feet, is an exhilarating experience like few others.

Sample Itinerary

Welcome to California! Today is a transit day. After your plane glides in for a landing over the waters of the San Francisco Bay, you will take a shuttle to claim your rental car before departing toward the great Sierra Mountains and the town of Bishop. This evening, meet your trek guide for an orientation and briefing on the upcoming days on the trail.

This morning, lace up your boots and get ready to conquer the tallest peak in the contiguous USA! After driving to the trailhead (approx. 90 minutes), you’ll start hiking up and over Cotton Pass. Your first night’s camp is at Chicken Springs Lake, approximately 4 miles in. Though it may feel short for a first day, it’s a full one considering you’ll climb 1,300 ft over the pass.

Wake up to your first sunrise in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains and enjoy a delicious camp breakfast to harness energy for the day. Over the course of the day you’ll follow the famous Pacific Crest Trail through majestic Foxtail Pine forests, ultimately arriving to the lower reaches of Rock Creek.

Leaving camp, traverse the relatively tame Guyot Pass to arrive to scenic Crabtree Meadows. From here, you’ll set your sights on the high camp at Guitar Lake, in preparation for tomorrow’s climactic day attempting to summit Mt. Whitney!

Today you’ll hit the trail extra early for an attempt to summit Mt. Whitney before lunch! If weather conditions cooperate, enjoy stunning panoramic views from the highest point in the USA outside Alaska. Return to Guitar Lake for a celebratory lunch (and perhaps a siesta). This afternoon, head down to the forested lower country of Crabtree Meadows and this evening enjoy a memorable sunset over Mt. Russel and the Kaweah Crest while relishing your day’s accomplishment.

Today you’ll begin hiking southward through Sequoia National Park, along an alternate route allowing you to see the headwaters of Rock Creek near Soldier Meadow. Enjoy one final night camping in the great outdoors, sharing tales of your adventures and basking in the glow of the Milky Way.

After one final hearty breakfast, pack up camp for the final time and exist the High Sierra via the now-familiar Cottonwood Pass. From here, you should reach the initial trailhead by mid-afternoon, leaving you with a free evening to enjoy one of the best showers of your life and a good night’s sleep.

After a restful night’s sleep in a proper bed, make your way back to San Francisco (6 hours) or onwards to your next California destination.
