Ansel Adams Wilderness Trek

Ansel Adams Wilderness Trek

Enjoy one of the best-kept secrets of California’s High Sierra mountains on this six-day Ansel Adams Wilderness trekking expedition. “Wilderness” is a designation given to protected public lands by the U.S. Congress “recognized as an area where the earth and community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain,” as specified in the Wilderness Act. During the Ansel Adams Wilderness trek, you’ll spend four days trekking 79,000 acres of spectacular wilderness speckled with granite mountains, breathtaking gorges, and outcroppings of rock. Customize your daily adventures by summitting 10,000-foot peaks and dipping in alpine lake swimming holes, and enjoy all the comforts of a pack-supported camping experience.

Sample Itinerary

Welcome to California! Today is a transit day. After your plane glides in for a landing over the waters of the San Francisco Bay, you will take a shuttle to claim your rental car. From here, it’s a scenic four-hour drive to Bass Lake on the southwest border of Yosemite National Park. This evening, meet your guide in the lobby for a briefing on the days ahead on the trail, and rest up for the adventure to come.

Meet your guide this morning and drive to the trailhead, approximately an hour away, where you’ll drop your gear with the pack team. Today you’ll hike for approximately six miles into a centrally-located lake within the designated Ansel Adams Wilderness Area, which will become your basecamp for the coming days. Settle in by sharing stories over the campfire and marveling at the clarity of the Milky Way above you.

Today your guide will lead a hike through the pristine upper lakes basin of the Ansel Adams Wilderness area via established on- and off-trail routes. Exact destinations and distance will vary depending on your preferences. The day ends with swimming at our lakeside camp and more excellent stargazing.

After a hearty breakfast prepared by your guide, you’ll set out again to continue exploring the far reaches of the Ansel Adams Wilderness area. We recommend an optional summit hike to one of the nearby 10,000-foot peaks that make up the southern border of Yosemite National Park. Other alternatives include hikes to nearby alpine likes with phenomenal fishing, swimming, and photo opportunities.

After a leisurely morning soaking in the beauty of your lakeside camp, enjoying an expertly prepared breakfast with unforgettable views, you’ll hike the approximately six miles back to the original trailhead. Return to Bass Lake in the mid-to-late afternoon, and enjoy a hot shower and a good night’s rest.

After a restful night’s sleep in a proper bed, you’ll enjoy one last morning in the Yosemite area. After breakfast, drive back to San Francisco (approximately 4 hours), or onwards to your next California destination.
