On arrival to Guatemala City, you’ll be met by an SA Representative who will transfer you to your hotel in Antigua, among one of the world’s best-conserved colonial cities in the Americas boasting colonial architecture and cobblestone streets taking you back nearly 300 years! Enjoy an evening exploring at leisure.
Antigua makes one feel as though they have traveled back in time. After breakfast, set out on an exploration by foot to reveal some of the city’s best kept secrets, viewing some of the most impressive historic sites in town, such as the Central Plaza and the churches of San Francisco and La Merced. Following your tour, you’ll enjoy a delicious local lunch before returning to your hotel for a relaxing afternoon.
Antigua certainly has bragging rights for growing some of the best coffee in Central America! You’ll have the opportunity to explore a local hacienda this afternoon with your private guide where you’ll sample some delicious, fresh brew while learning all about the process of creation from seed to cup. There following, enjoy a scenic transfer to the impressive Lake Atitlán, where you’ll settle into your lake-side hotel for the evening.
Lake Atitlán is considered by many as the most beautiful lake in the world, lined by small villages and impressive volcanos. After breakfast, you’ll set out by private boat in search for two villages resting along its shores, Santiago Atitlán and San Juan la Laguna, where you’ll visit the local art and textile co-ops as well as learn about the Mayan culture and local customs. Following lunch, you’ll return to your hotel for the evening.
In route back to Guatemala City, you’ll stop off to tour one of the most colorful markets in the Americas, the Chichicastenango Market, which draws in vendors from all over Guatemala, especially on Thursdays and Sundays (in case you can plan your travel days accordingly!). Following your guided tour filled with unique sites and aromas, you’ll carry forward to Guatemala City for the evening.
Bright and early this morning you’ll travel by flight to the Peten region, a vast expanse of land occupied by rainforest, savannas and incredible Mayan ruins. You’ll spend the morning at your hotel where you can enjoy a late breakfast and possibly an early ‘siesta’ before setting out for a sunset tour at the impressive Yaxha archaeological site, once a ceremonial site of the ancient Mayan civilization.
Today is spent exploring the Tikal National Park, home to some of the most fascinating archaeological remains of the ancient Maya Civilization. Tikal is known to be one of the most important cities and ceremonial centers of the Maya civilization, as well as one of the largest excavation sites in the Americas. During your tour, you’ll learn all about the history of the ancient civilization and explore the remaining temples up close. Then, enjoy lunch in the middle of the jungle – if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a few monkeys and macaws in route! Board a flight back to Guatemala City for the evening.
At the appropriate time today, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your international flight home.
