Splendid Sri Lanka: The Pearl of the Indian Ocean

Secondary Categories: Sri LankaGuide

Sri Lanka is a captivating and diverse island nation that boasts a rich tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty. It’s also blessed with warm people and great food. Located off the southern coast of India, this tropical paradise offers a remarkable blend of ancient traditions and modern experiences. Here’s a guide to some of biggest attractions.

Negombo: Gateway to Sri Lanka

A quaint fishermen village near the Dutch Canal.

Negombo, situated near Bandaranaike International Airport, welcomes visitors with its pristine beaches and a vibrant fishing community. The gentle waves at Negombo Beach make it perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or taking leisurely strolls along the picturesque coastline.

Don't miss the chance to visit the Dutch Fort, a testament to the city's colonial history. Stroll through its narrow streets and admire the old-world architecture. The bustling Negombo Fish Market, meanwhile, is a sensory delight. Witness the local fishermen bringing in their daily catch, and if you're feeling adventurous, purchase some fresh seafood to be prepared at nearby restaurants.

St. Mary's Church is an architectural masterpiece with intricate decorations that provide insights into the city's rich cultural tapestry. Also consider taking a boat tour along the Dutch Canal, a network of scenic waterways that runs through Negombo. It's a great way to observe local life – and, if you’re lucky, wildlife too.

Sigiriya: The ancient marvel

The Sigiriya rock fortress welcomes visitors at the Lion Gate with stone sculptures depicting lion paws.

Sigiriya, often called the "Eighth Wonder of the World," is home to the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site that beckons adventurers from all over the world. The climb to the fortress is challenging but rewarding – and the views of the surrounding landscapes more than justify the effort.

The frescoes and ruins atop the rock tell tales of an ancient kingdom. Sigiriya, aka "Lion Rock," boasts a rich and intriguing history that dates back over 1,500 years. Originally, it served as a Buddhist monastery, but it gained fame during the reign of King Kasyapa I in the 5th century AD. King Kasyapa chose Sigiriya as his capital and transformed the rock into a palace complex with magnificent gardens, elaborate frescoes, and remarkable architectural features. The most iconic element of Sigiriya is the lion-shaped gateway, from which it gets its name. Tragically, King Kasyapa's reign ended in turmoil, but Sigiriya continued to be used as a monastic site until the 14th century. Today, it stands as a testament to ancient Sri Lankan engineering and artistic prowess.

For a different perspective of Sigiriya, hike up Pidurangala Rock, which offers a unique vantage point of the Sigiriya Rock and its majestic surroundings. While in the area, be sure to explore the Dambulla Cave Temple, a complex of five caves adorned with impressive Buddhist murals and statues, just a short drive from Sigiriya. We also recommend going on a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park. If you plan your visit right, you might even witness the awe-inspiring "Gathering" of elephants, a remarkable wildlife spectacle that occurs annually.

Kandy: Cultural gem of the hills

Kandy, nestled amidst picturesque hills, is a cultural treasure trove and a serene escape. Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, a sacred Buddhist site that houses a relic believed to be the tooth of the Buddha. Stroll through the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, a lush paradise featuring a vast collection of exotic plants and trees. Kandy Lake provides another serene backdrop for leisurely walks, and the nearby Royal Palace complex adds to the city's historical charm. Once night falls, why not attend a traditional Kandyan dance performance to experience the vibrant local culture through music, dance, and intricate costumes?

While in Kandy, we’d highly recommend taking a day trip to nearby tea plantations and the Ceylon Tea Museum in Hanthana, to immerse yourself in the world of Ceylon tea. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the tea plantations, with emerald-green hills rolling into the horizon and sample the world’s finest tea at source. Learn about the art of tea cultivation and processing and visit a tea factory to see how the leaves are withered, rolled, fermented, dried, and graded.
