Two for the price of one

Skógafoss Waterfall in Iceland
Skógafoss Waterfall

Begin your adventure with two awe-inspiring waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Seljalandsfoss allows you to walk behind the cascading water, experiencing the thunderous power up close. And Skogafoss impresses with its sheer drop of 200 feet and offers panoramic views from the top of the falls. The legend of buried treasure at its base adds to the allure.

Black sand and canyons

Reynisfjara black sand beach and basalt rock formation near Vik, Iceland
Reynisfjara black sand beach is an astonishing place to be.

Continue south to the iconic black sand beach at Reynisfjara, near the village of Vik. Marvel at the towering basalt columns and Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising dramatically from the ocean, but please watch out for the powerful waves and heed local warnings. Legend has it that these sea stacks were trolls who were turned to stone at sunrise.

A little further east, Fjaðrárgljúfur is a dramatic canyon that winds through lush greenery. The canyon provides a hiking opportunity with incredible viewpoints overlooking the meandering river below. The canyon's serpentine shape and steep cliffs make it a photographer's dream.

Glaciers and fjords

Vatnajökull glacier at Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon in Iceland
Vatnajökull glacier is one of the largest glaciers in Europe!

As you head eastward, you'll reach Vatnajökull National Park, home to Europe's largest glacier. Explore the park's stunning landscapes, including glacial lagoons like Jökulsárlón, where icebergs float serenely, and Diamond Beach, where they wash ashore, glistening like jewels. Consider a guided glacier hike or ice cave tour to immerse yourself in this icy wonderland. The Vatnajökull glacier covers about 8% of Iceland's landmass (!) and is an awe-inspiring testament to nature's grandeur.

The picturesque village of Seydisfjordur, nestled at the end of a deep fjord, is a real highlight of the East Fjords. Stroll along colorful wooden houses, visit the quirky blue church, and take in the serene surroundings. Seydisfjordur is also a gateway to the wilderness with hiking trails in the nearby mountains.

Puffins and pebbles

Puffins at Borgarfjörður Eystri, Iceland

Known for its puffin colonies, Borgarfjörður Eystri is a birdwatcher's paradise. During the summer, you can spot these charismatic birds nesting on the cliffs. The village itself exudes tranquility and is perfect for leisurely exploration. And it’s not just a puffin’s paradise: it’s home to a diverse range of bird species, making it a haven for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts.

In the town of Stöðvarfjörður, visit Petra's Stone Collection, a unique museum showcasing a vast collection of Icelandic minerals and stones. Petra Sveinsdóttir, the founder, collected these treasures throughout her life, and the museum offers a fascinating insight into Iceland's geological diversity. The museum houses an astounding collection of over 9,000 minerals and stones, each with a unique story.

Waterfalls and islands

Aerial view of Hengifoss waterfall and red and green erosion rocks in Iceland
The color of Hengifoss was created by a mix of volcanic ash, clay/soil, and iron-rich lava, which then oxidized (rusted) to this stunning red hue.

Embark on a hike to Hengifoss, one of Iceland's tallest waterfalls. The trail takes you through scenic landscapes and rewards your efforts with the mesmerizing sight of the waterfall cascading down a red-striped cliff face. Along the way, you'll also encounter Litlanesfoss, a waterfall surrounded by striking basalt columns, adding to the hike's enchantment. Hengifoss is known for its distinctive red rock layers, a rare geological feature in Iceland.

Also be sure to explore the picturesque village of Djúpivogur, known for its charming harbor and artistically decorated outdoor sculptures. Then, take a boat trip from Djúpivogur to Papey Island, an uninhabited paradise where you can spot seals and a variety of bird species, including puffins and eider ducks. Papey Island is a nature reserve, and the absence of permanent human inhabitants has preserved its pristine environment.

See it for yourself

Southern Iceland and the East Fjords offer an extraordinary journey through Iceland's unspoiled beauty. From the dramatic waterfalls and glacial landscapes in the south to the serene fjords and charming villages in the east, this is one of those places that simply has to be experienced to be believed.
