Varanasi: Where the Sacred Ganges Beckons

My journey began in Varanasi, a city steeped in spiritual mystique along the sacred Ganges River. Each evening, Varanasi comes alive with the Ganga Aarti—a mesmerizing ritual where thousands gather to honor the goddess Ganga through chants, fire offerings, and devotional music. Witnessing this sacred ceremony, whether from the exclusive viewing balconies above or amidst the throng, is a profound experience that left me spellbound.

Early the next morning, I boarded a small, humble boat to float along the Ganges River. Hindu devotees believe that bathing in the Ganges at sunrise, an hour symbolizing new beginnings, purifies the soul and absolves sins. Many pilgrims walk barefoot or shave their heads as acts of devotion, honoring their time at the Ganges. Witnessing this sacred ritual during my sunrise boat ride was a truly special experience.

Later, my Varanasi's journey led me to an incredible silk weaving workshop. Working on a traditional loom, these expert artisans create about 2 inches of product a day—a true labor of love. So of course, I had to leave Varanasi with treasured silk gifts!

Udaipur: The Venice of India

Next, I found myself in Udaipur, loving known as the “The Venice of India” for its serene lakes, stunning lake palaces, and of course, visitors enjoying scenic boat rides along the waters.

During my time in Udaipur, I was able to explore the lovely Jagmandir Island Palace. This lake palace (found truly in the middle of a lake!) dates back to the 17th century and once sheltered Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan during his rebellion.

In present times, my guide explained that Jagmandir Island Palace is not only a touristic site, but also can be rented out for elite events- such as Shakira's unforgettable performance at an exclusive India wedding!

Ranthambore: In Search of India's Tigers

A lovely day for a safari! (Photo: Jackie Becker)

Next, it was time to head into Ranthambore National Park for a tiger safari! Nearly 100 Bengal Tigers roam these lands.

I learned during my visit to Ranthambore that the National Park is divided into several “zones”. Some zones have more tigers than others: other zones have more female tigers so are more likely to have cubs, etc. Not to worry though – there is truly no “bad” zone at Ranthambore! All zones will give visitors the opportunity to spot tigers.

During my Ranthambore visit, our expert guides helped us explore the reserve to find all kinds of wildlife (including foxes, deer, and more!). While we didn’t spot tigers on our safari, this served as a reminder that (1) wildlife is wild and cannot be guaranteed to appear, and (2) it’s always best if you’re keen to spot a specific animal on your travels to give yourself plenty of chances to do so! I always help my clients weave in several chances for tiger-spotting in Ranthambore, and they always come away thrilled!

Jodhpur: Where History Meets Gastronomy

Nestled in the heart of Rajasthan, I absolutely loved exploring Jodhpur’s majestic Mehrangarh Fort. This towering masterpiece is adorned with hidden palaces, courtyards, and a museum full of royal heritage. Fun fact: Mehrangarh Fort has appeared in several films, including "The Dark Knight Rises," showcasing its dramatic “wow” appeal!

My personal Jodhpur highlight, though? Exploring the vibrant street food market, where I watched expert chefs craft delicious Indian food treats. From Bharwa Mirch Pakora (or spicy stuffed chili fritters) to the famous Samosa, I was amazed by how quickly these chefs could prepare Indian favorites—and how delicious they turned out!

I also had the pleasure of touring the stunning RAAS Jodhpur, a luxury-boutique hotel offering exclusive views of Mehrangarh Fort. If you’re interested in visiting Jodhpur and love great views like I do, this hotel would be my hands-down recommendation.

Narlai: Chasing Leopards and Dining by Candlelight

When I arrived in Narlai, I headed out on a jeep safari in search of India’s magnificent leopards. It was such a fun adventure to find these incredible giants lounging on the rocks of Narlai – we saw 3 different leopards on our 3-hour ride! If you love wildlife experiences, I promise that Narlai is an India destination you don’t want to miss.

As the day drew to a close, one of my favorite experiences of the entire two-week trip through India awaited me—an intimate Stepwell Dinner. This magical evening took place next to a 3rd-century stepwell, a unique Indian structure designed to collect water and make it easily accessible. My thali dinner was illuminated by countless candles, and accompanied by traditional music played by a local priest. The ambiance, the food, and the company made this dinner truly enchanting.
