Hola from the Galápagos Islands! Join Destination Expert Pilar as she ventures through one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. From snorkeling with sea lions and spotting penguins to visiting conservation centers and volcanic landscapes, this journey through the Enchanted Isles is packed with adventure, wildlife, and insight into sustainable travel practices.

Hello from the Galápagos! My name is Pilar, Destination Expert at SA Expeditions. I recently had the incredible opportunity to explore five distinct islands in this breathtaking archipelago—and what a journey it was. From dramatic volcanic landscapes and close wildlife encounters to learning about the science-backed efforts to protect this fragile ecosystem, the Galápagos is truly unlike anywhere else on Earth. Come along as I share the highlights from my expedition!

I’m exploring five unique islands in this breathtaking archipelago while explaining how tourism can be more sustainable and actively promote conservation efforts.

After a quick bus ride from San Cristóbal Airport to the harbor, we spotted our very first sea lions before even boarding the yacht! Once on board and settled into our cabins, we kicked off our journey with a delicious welcome lunch.

Our first adventure took us to the Cerro Colorado Tortoise Protection and Growing Centre, where we met the iconic Galápagos Giant Tortoises, the world’s largest terrestrial reptiles! These gentle giants are keystone species, playing a vital role in shaping their ecosystem.

By traveling with SA Expeditions on one of our select cruises, you’re directly supporting science-backed conservation efforts by organizations such as the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Galápagos Conservation Trust that helps to protect these endangered tortoises for future generations.

Española Island: A Haven for Creatures of Land and Sea

This morning, we cruised by panga to the stunning Gardner Bay on Española Island, where turquoise waters and soft white sands welcomed us. We shared the beach with playful sea lions and spotted green sea turtles at one of their key breeding grounds! Teaming with the Charles Darwin Foundation, select cruises support research that helps protect sea turtles in the Galápagos. By providing crucial scientific insights, this work empowers environmental authorities to improve marine conservation and safeguard these incredible creatures for generations to come.

Tag along as we head to Suarez Point on Española Island to view the ocean waves crashing onto the southern basaltic cliffs, forming a spectacular blowhole, where the water sprays meters high into the air. This rocky area is also home to marine iguanas and the most impressive and diverse seabirds of the archipelago.

Did you know?

Marine iguanas sneeze salt! To deal with all the salt they swallow while feeding in the ocean, these unique Galápagos reptiles use a special gland to filter it out - then dramatically sneeze it from their nostrils.

Wildlife Wonders & Timeless Traditions on Floreana Island

Early mornings hit different in the Galápagos! Today’s land excursion took us to the magical Floreana Island, and the wildlife did not disappoint. As we stepped onto the beach, we were welcomed by sea lions lounging in the sun and blue-footed boobies diving from the sky at lightening speeds to snatch up their favorite snack - sardines!

Why are their feet so blue?

Blue-footed boobies have vibrant feet that actually play a big role in courtship. Females prefer males with the brightest blue feet, which signal good health (and a diet rich in sardines!).

From there, we made our way to Punta Cormorant lagoon, where we were lucky enough to spot a group of American flamingos! These are among the rarest flamingos in the world, with only a few hundred living in the Galápagos. Their presence here is always a special sight.

While admiring these incredible species, we’re also reminded of the challenges they face:

  • Blue-footed booby populations are in decline, and

  • Marine plastic pollution poses serious threats to seabirds.

That’s why the Galápagos has some of the world’s strictest plastic regulations, and every visitor plays a role in protecting this ecosystem.️

A mailbox in the middle of paradise?

At Post Office Bay, we visited a wooden barrel with a story dating back to the 18th century, when sailors left letters to be hand-delivered by others, no stamps, just trust. Today, tourists keep the tradition alive, leaving postcards for strangers to carry across the world. Yes, many still get delivered!

Galápagos Penguins & Otherworldly Views

This morning’s adventure: a Panga ride through the stunning waters of Sullivan Bay on Santiago Island! We cruised past rocky cliffs where blue-footed boobies perched proudly… and then came my most anticipated moment: Galápagos penguins! These tiny, fast-swimming wonders are found nowhere else on Earth and are sadly endangered due to their small population. Spotting them in the wild? Unforgettable.

When you travel on select Galápagos cruises with us, you’re not just exploring - you’re directly supporting organizations like the Charles Darwin Foundation that implement conservation, scientific research, and local education to help protect species like these.

This afternoon, we set off to one of the youngest and most dramatic islands in the archipelago - Bartholomew Island. Think: Spatter cones, lava craters, and a surreal moonscape carved by ancient eruptions. And the views? Just wait until you see Pinnacle Bay — easily one of the most iconic panoramas in the Galápagos.

Fun Fact:

Galápagos penguins are the only wild penguins living north of the equator! They stay cool thanks to cold ocean currents and shady lava rock nests.

A Final Glimpse of Paradise

Our final dreamy morning in the Galápagos began with an early Panga ride through the mangroves, and the wildlife put on one last show. We spotted pelicans perched and hunting, sea turtles gliding below, reef sharks weaving through the roots, and the breathtaking golden rays, their fins moving like wings in flight.

Fun Fact:

Rays use a rare method of reproduction called ovoviviparity — they lay eggs inside their bodies, then give birth once they hatch internally.

Cruising the Galápagos isn’t just about spotting wildlife - it’s about protecting it.

From plastic-free operations and smart waste management to solar-powered systems and on-board desalination, Galápagos cruises follow some of the strictest environmental regulations in the world. Many, partnered with International Galapagos Tour Operators Association, are dedicated to providing the highest quality and most environmentally responsible tours in the Galapagos Islands to preserve and protect the region. Measures include:

  • Strict visitor limits

  • Licensed Naturalist Guides

  • Sustainable Ship Practices/Small Ship Size

  • Support for Conservation Projects

  • Locally Sourced and Sustainable Food

All to ensure visitors leave as little impact as possible on this fragile and extraordinary ecosystem.

Thanks for joining me on this unforgettable journey through the Galápagos! Whether you're snorkeling alongside sea lions or learning about the science that helps protect giant tortoises, every moment in the Galápagos connects you more deeply with nature.
