Hola from Panama! My name is Jorge, Destination Expert at SA Expeditions. Over the next few days, I invite you to follow along as I uncover the magic of Boquete, Panama.

After a one-hour-and-fifteen-minute flight from Panama City to David, an hour’s drive to a small port in Boca Chica, and a forty-minute boat ride across sparkling waters, we arrived at Isla Parida—a pristine private island where a rustic beach bar welcomed us with tropical fruit cocktails.

Though the journey was long, every minute was worth it. This island is the kind of place where disconnecting from civilization isn’t just encouraged—it’s inevitable. Here, time slows down as you reconnect with nature, savor the ocean breeze, and simply be. Between swimming in turquoise waters, indulging in fresh food, and sharing laughter with friends, the island reminded us what travel is really about—presence.

By late afternoon, it was time to continue our journey to Valle Escondido Wellness Resort in Boquete. The drive usually takes about two hours, but depending on the weather, you might want to add another two—just part of the adventure! For safety reasons due recent to heavy rains, our route was slightly changed, but as they say—better safe than sorry.

Into the Forest: Waterfalls & Ancient Trees

After a day of sun, sand, and sea, today we traded swimsuits for hiking boots. Our plan: a waterfall hike deep in Boquete’s lush forests. For safety reasons, our route was slightly changed, but as they say—better safe than sorry.

The 30-minute drive to the trailhead was filled with local insights from our wonderful local guide, who explained that the word Panama comes from an Indigenous term meaning “abundance of fish.” It’s easy to imagine early settlers thriving near rivers and coasts rich with life.

The trail began with a gentle uphill walk toward the legendary Thousand-Year Tree. The hike wasn’t difficult, but it was bursting with color—wild chamomile, naranjilla, and blackberries grew freely along the way. Standing before the ancient tree, you could feel an almost spiritual energy radiating from it—something words can’t quite capture. After another twenty minutes, we reached the waterfall, took a few well-deserved photos, and made our way back, tired but fulfilled. A hot shower, a good meal, and a quiet evening at the hotel was the perfect way to end the day.

The Flavor of Boquete: Coffee Heaven at Don Pepe Estate Coffee Farm

No visit to Boquete is complete without coffee—and today, we discovered the beating heart of its culture. After an hour drive, we arrived at the Don Pepe Estate Coffee Farm, one of the largest and most impressive plantations I’ve ever visited.

Our local guide welcomed us with a smile and led us through a coffee-tasting experience that awakened every sense. We sampled five varieties—Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon, Java, and the world-famous Geisha. We began by inhaling their aromas, dry at first, then with hot water added. The guide showed us how to skim the foam to enhance the fragrance before taking our first sips. Each flavor tells its own story—fruity, floral, bold, or silky smooth.

Afterward, we toured the plantation, learning about each step from planting to processing. I was especially fascinated by the manual harvest, done entirely by hand—a craft requiring patience, skill, and care. Seeing the people behind each cup gave me a new appreciation for what we often take for granted in our everyday routines.

Farewell, but Not Goodbye

Our time in Boquete—and in Panama—came to an end all too soon. As we said goodbye, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experiences, the landscapes, and the warmth of the people we met along the way.

This short journey was more than a trip; it was a lesson in simplicity, color, and connection. Thank you for following along, and a special thanks to SA Expeditions for making this adventure possible. Until next time, my fellow travelers—keep exploring, keep learning, never stop being curious and always remember to BE MOVED.
