5 of the World’s Most Unexpected Flower Shows

There are few travel surprises quite like finding a desert in bloom. Landscapes that spend most of the year looking stark and inhospitable can, for a fleeting moment, become some of the most colourful places on Earth. From South Africa’s famous Namaqualand daisies to the red-rock wilderness of Jordan, here are our top picks.

What do you think of when you hear the word “desert”? Endless dunes, sun-baked rocks and desolate landscapes where nothing seems to grow... 

But when the stars align, some of the world’s driest places can transform almost overnight. Sand and stone give way to carpets of colour, with tiny wildflowers pushing through parched earth in one of nature’s most spectacular displays.

The catch? Desert blooms are notoriously unpredictable. Flowering depends on rainfall, temperature and other conditions that can vary dramatically from one year to the next. There truly are no guarantees. But knowing roughly when to go can give you the best chance of witnessing one of nature’s most extraordinary transformations.

Namaqualand, South Africa

If there’s one desert bloom that deserves a place on every flower lover’s bucket list, it’s Namaqualand. Every year, usually between August and September, the semi-desert of South Africa’s West Coast transforms into a spectacular carpet of wildflowers.

A good season can produce extraordinary carpets of orange, yellow, white, pink and purple, while a dry winter may result in a much more modest showing. The timing also shifts depending on the rains and temperatures, with flowers generally appearing first in warmer, lower-lying areas before moving into higher ground. The flowers are at their most spectacular on sunny days, when they open towards the sun, and conditions can vary considerably even within the same region.

Unlike the other desert blooms on this list, there is a pretty good chance of seeing the Namaqualand spring flowers. Especially if you travel with a knowledgeable local guide who knows the backroads well.

Atacama Desert, Chile

The Atacama is one of the driest places on Earth, which makes its occasional explosion of flowers all the more extraordinary. Along parts of Chile’s coastal desert, unusual winter rains can trigger the phenomenon known as the .

The best-known flowering periods tend to occur between August and October, although the timing and intensity depend almost entirely on rainfall. In particularly good years, the normally barren landscape is dotted with purple, pink, yellow and white flowers, sometimes covering huge areas.

A major rainfall event is needed to trigger a spectacular bloom, so you might have to act quickly to see them (we are on standby for last-minute requests). Some years produce an impressive display; others barely produce flowers at all. The good news is that even without a bloom, the Atacama offers extraordinary volcanic landscapes, salt flats, geysers and impossibly clear night skies.

Wadi Rum, Jordan

Jordan’s Wadi Rum is best known for its towering sandstone mountains, sweeping red dunes and cinematic landscapes. But come spring, particularly March to April, a softer side of the desert emerges.

Following winter rains, wildflowers and hardy desert plants can appear between the rocks and across the sandy plains. The blooms are subtle rather than carpet-like, but that is part of their appeal: spotting a splash of colour against Wadi Rum’s rust-red landscape can feel like discovering a secret.

The amount of flowering varies from year to year, with wetter winters generally producing a better display. Spring is also one of the most pleasant times to explore Wadi Rum, before the intense summer heat arrives.

Patagonia, Argentina & Chile

Patagonia may not immediately spring to mind when you think of deserts, but much of the region is characterised by vast, dry steppe. Here, the spring and early summer months, roughly October to December, bring new growth and occasional bursts of colour to the otherwise rugged landscape.

Wildflowers appear among the grasses and scrub, particularly after seasonal rains, while the backdrop remains unmistakably Patagonian: jagged mountains, glacial lakes, windswept plains and huge open skies. The exact timing varies considerably by location and weather, and Patagonia's famously changeable climate means there’s never a guarantee of a major floral display. 

Namib Desert, Namibia

Namibia is another destination where the desert occasionally reveals a surprising burst of life. The Namib is famously arid, yet good rains can trigger brief displays of grasses, flowering plants and other vegetation across parts of the desert and surrounding plains. If you are incredibly lucky you may even get to see the Sandhof lilies in bloom.

There’s no reliable annual "flower season" in the Namib. Instead, blooms are closely linked to rainfall, which is generally concentrated during the summer rainy season from roughly November to March. A particularly good rainy season can produce impressive displays, while dry years may offer very little.

Further north, Etosha and the wider landscapes of Damaraland can also become greener and more vibrant following good rains. Wildlife responds quickly, with animals taking advantage of fresh vegetation and temporary water sources. The real magic of Namibia is the contrast. Towering dunes, ancient valleys and gravel plains provide the backdrop, while delicate flowers appear for a brief window before the heat returns.
