The best time to visit Bolivia

Highlands 

Temperatures in the Bolivian highlands can range up to the mid-70s Fahrenheit, depending on altitude and time of year. Bet on the warmer summer months, from November to March. Temperatures do drop significantly at night, down to around 25°F. There can also be fluctuations depending on altitude and location. At higher altitudes, such as in cities like La Paz or Potosí, temperatures tend to be cooler. 

Perched at an altitude of more than 11,000 feet, La Paz is absolutely worth exploring. Marvel at the ancient ruins of Tiwanaku, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rich indigenous culture, traditional festivals, and the flavors of local cuisine make it a must-visit destination. 

Altiplano 

The Altiplano, a vast plateau located at high altitudes, offers a surreal experience for adventurous souls. The mesmerizing Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, stretches as far as the eye can see, creating a mirror-like reflection during the rainy season. This otherworldly landscape provides the perfect backdrop for incredible photo opportunities and stargazing under the clear, unpolluted skies. 

In the Altiplano region, temperatures can range from 20°F to 60°F, with cooler temperatures during the evening and early morning. During the dry season from May to October, the skies are clear and the weather conditions are perfect to fully appreciate the beauty of the region. That said, visiting the Salar de Uyuni during the wet season (December thru April) can make for spectacular photographs. 

Amazon rainforest 

While the Amazon rainforest rarely falls below the upper 70s Fahrenheit year-round, what could help you decide when to visit is its seasons. The wet season, typically from December to May, tops out at around the low 90s Fahrenheit. With frequent rainfall and higher humidity levels, you’ll enjoy lush vegetation and increased wildlife activity. 

On the other hand, the dry season, from June to November, brings with it clearer skies and easier navigation. Hitting the mid-80s Fahrenheit during the day, temperatures can be a little cooler at night. 

This is one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Explore dense jungles, encounter exotic wildlife like jaguars, monkeys, and tropical birds. Learn about indigenous communities that have preserved their ancestral traditions for centuries. 

Busy times of the year 

Bolivia’s busy season typically coincides with the country’s major festivals. For example, in February, the Oruro Carnival takes place, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world to enjoy the dazzling parades and traditional dances. May to September is also popular, as it coincides with the dry season when the weather is most pleasant for outdoor exploration. 

Festivals and things to do 

Bolivia’s festivals offer a glimpse into the cultural tapestry of the country. During La Paz’ Alasitas Festival in late January, miniature versions of desired items are bought and blessed, symbolizing the wish for abundance and prosperity. Also in La Paz, The Festival of the Great Power, held every year on a Saturday at the end of May or beginning of June, showcases the religious syncretism between Catholicism and indigenous beliefs, with colorful processions and traditional dances filling the streets.
